Live Brief Introduction

Students are presented with a typical design brief used in a professional setting. I run through the objectives, key deliverables, and must-haves, including logo usage, style guides, and differences between print and digital artwork. I then introduce the current poster for the exhibition they’ll be designing for, prompting discussion about what works, what doesn’t, and how to approach the challenge creatively.

We spend two hours at the Design Museum, where students are welcomed by a member of The Design Museum and guided around the exhibition. They research and draw inspiration from professional work while connecting it to the brief with my help. This hands-on experience helps them see how design decisions impact real-world exhibitions and marketing.

MID-PROJECT REVIEW - review designs for full class

The students present their initial printed concepts, I provide structured, hands-on design reviews. Each student receives a 5 minute detailed, professional feedback on their poster and merchandise designs, including advice on composition, typography, branding, and print vs digital production.

I guide students through refining their ideas, helping them understand what works in a professional context and why, and how to adapt their concepts to meet client and exhibition requirements. These sessions mirror real-world studio practice, giving students practical work-experience style learning, helping them build portfolio-ready work and develop confidence in presenting and defending their creative decisions.

FINAL DESIGN REVIEWS & PROFESSIONAL FEEDBACK

The final review session focuses on students’ final designs, beginning with a group discussion followed by one-to-one feedback. I provide targeted critique and guidance to refine their work to exhibition-quality standards, while coaching students on how to present their designs professionally, just as they would in a creative agency or design studio.

Students present their final concepts in a mini exhibition for the Design Museum team, simulating a real client pitch. I support the students in planning the exhibition layout, running through their designs, and meeting the Museum team. The Museum team selects pieces they feel could be used for marketing or merchandise, and the student with the chosen design receives a goody bag as recognition. Throughout, I coach students on professional presentation skills, articulating design decisions, and responding to feedback, giving them invaluable work-experience style learning and exposure to a leading cultural institution.
